The Calcium-Magnesium Connection

Most people are aware that in order to build healthy bones and teeth, they need to consume a diet high in calcium. Magnesium, however, is often overlooked. Magnesium is highly important for the synthesis of protein, and supports over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. Many of these reactions produce energy and contribute to cardiovascular function. Additionally, magnesium helps to relax the muscles that calcium is responsible for contracting. Because of this, magnesium has come to light as a mineral that is nearly as important as calcium - and a balance must be maintained between the two.

A magnesium deficiency can lead to a number of problems, such as kidney stones, arrhythmia, high blood pressure, tachycardia, and other heart problems. During or after pregnancy, a lack of magnesium combined with an iron or folic acid deficiency can lead to (pre) eclampsia. The Advantage of Calcium Magnesium Supplements

Just as a lack of magnesium or calcium can lead to health problems, there are risks associated with an excess of magnesium and calcium. Magnesium overload, which can result from an over-use of milk of magnesia or Epsom salts, can cause an imbalance with other minerals, including calcium. This may lead to depression, loss of energy, fatigue, gastro-intestinal problems, dizziness, and a variety of other problems. A vitamin supplement that includes the recommended daily supply of calcium, magnesium, and other essential vitamins and minerals will provide you with the proper balance of these important nutrients.

As with anything, moderation is key to good health, and more than the recommended daily allowance is not necessarily helpful. The risks of health problems from too much magnesium are far greater than any possible benefit. Interestingly, too much or too little calcium and magnesium (or an extreme imbalance of the two), can have similar effects. Just as a deficiency of these minerals can lead to conditions like osteoporosis, an excess or imbalance can trigger the disease, as well.

There have been many advances in medical studies over the years, and the more we learn, the more complex nutrition becomes. The correct levels and balance of many minerals in the body can prevent many health problems, while too little, too much, or an imbalance can cause just as many problems. The correct balance is easiest to achieve through the use of a supplement with the correct amount of calcium, magnesium, and other necessary vitamins and minerals.
